AAP is Hiring! Legislative Assistant, Federal Advocacy

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is seeking a Legislative Assistant, Federal Advocacy in our Washington, DC office. This individual will assist with and provide support for AAP’s advocacy efforts to Congress, regulatory, and judicial bodies and to other advocacy groups. We are looking for a team player with relevant experience and a strong commitment to advocating for the health and well-being of all children.

Working with the Director of Federal and Global Health Advocacy, this individual will monitor, analyze, and report on legislative and regulatory activities within a broad issues portfolio including global child health, immigration, emergency medical services for children, pediatric HIV, and others. They will represent the AAP at meetings with various interest groups, task forces, and child and health care coalitions as well as assist the Director with drafting and editing testimony, correspondence, legislative text and amendments, and responses to regulations, sub-regulatory guidance, background papers, etc. 

The ideal candidate will have at least two years’ related experience in health or federal government arena required, preferably, worked on Capitol Hill, in a federal agency, or with an association. A bachelor’s degree in a related field is required as well as substantive knowledge of overall federal legislative and regulatory processes; however, prior experience or knowledge working on the specific policy issues within the issue portfolio is not a prerequisite. This individual must be a strategic thinker with superior writing skills and diligent attention to detail to coordinate a wide array of time-sensitive work. A successful candidate will be able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, collaborate diplomatically with internal and external partners, promote and maintain a positive and cooperative team-oriented work environment, with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. A strong technical acumen is essential with proficiency in MS Office and experience with virtual meeting platforms (e.g., WebEx, Teams) preferred. Some travel and weekend work is required. 

Hybrid working arrangement of 40% on-site at our downtown office in Northwest DC.

A reasonable estimate of the current base pay range for this position is $70,368.96 - $74,278.36. Compensation decisions take into account a wide range of factors, including but not limited to relevant experience, skills, certifications, geographic location, business needs, and organizational policies. In addition to those factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as a part of any final offer.
